A
lot of people argue that the EVO VI was the meanest of them all. The
care that we’re featuring this time was almost stock months ago, with
only cosmetic and exhaust mods. It definitely had nothing in common with
the beast that is now, Dr Jekyll decided to show its true
spirit. Mr. Hyde is purpose built for one reason: slaying puppies. In
all seriousness… to terrorize tarmac in the UK Time Attack series, under
the hands, or better yet right foot of Christopher Hamer.
Christopher’s family has a long racing tradition. Both his father and grand father were involved in some sort of bike racing series. The company behind this EVO is Eurospec out of the UK. Founded in 1999, Eurospec specializes in the service, repair, modification and tuning of Japanese Performance vehicles. One its most famous builds is Romain’s classic Honda CRX Time Attack Car that won 5 out of 7 rounds last year.
Lets move on to the EVO itself.
A 2.2 Cosworth stroker kit with a GT35 turbo producing 560bhp and 550 pounds of Torque wasn’t enough for driver Christopher so, after this early iteration, the team moved on to a totally different engine setup.
Engine wise the stock internals were replaced with Wiscos 1400HD pistons, R&R Pro Billet rods and a 100mm Ross Sport billet balanced crankshaft. The block was decked and bored with a Torque Plate. The end result is a displacement of 2.3lt. Of course there’s no place in such a build for a balance shaft, our teeth tend to disagree but Eurospec assured us it’s ok!At the bottom of the block an AMS baffled oil sump avoids oil starvation during high speed corners.
The head has was modified to the same extent. Eurospec ported and polished it and installed Ferrea oversized valves, bronze valve guides and Ferrea Beehive Springs. The latter are designed to reduce valvetrain harmonics, provide greater spring stability and reduce spring and retainer masses.
On top of them Jun 272 Cams and HKS adjustable cam pulleys linked by a kevlar belt complete the valvetrain. Another nice addition is the Kiggly Racing HLA Pressure Regulator which actively regulates the lash adjuster to supply pressure at a constant 15psi. Between the shortblock and the cylinder head a Cosworth multi-layer gasket is sandwitched and averything is bolted by ARP and Cosworth stud kits.
A Koyo race spec radiator and Samco hoses take care of this engine’s cooling needs. The ECU is manufactured by Vipec.
This set-up produces over 700hp on Race Gas thanks to an HTA 3586 V–Band turbo kit. Air is cooled by a Pace FMIC. A JMF race intake manifold and a S90 75mm throttle body complete the mechanical build.
This amount of air needs an equally capable fuel system. Eurospec opted for a triple fuel pump setup: a Deatschwerks 300 in tank pump and two Bosch 044 to feed the mighty Injector Dynamics 2000cc injectors. Fuel pressure is kept constant by a Tomei pressure regulator while a swirl pot in the boot between the in tank and inline pumps avoids fuel starvation.
On the hot side there is a custom ceramic coated exhaust manifold with a 44mm Tial wastegate, connected to a Gizzmo Boost Controller. The gasses end their journey into an HKS exhaust system.
With great power comes great responsibility they say… this torque friendly engine needs a transmission capable of withstanding a lot of abuse. The gearbox, mated to the engine by an Exedy twin plate clutch, was dismantled and Cryo Treated. The differentials are the tried and tested models found in the RS edition.
Handling: BC Race coilovers and a Whiteline sway bars – endlinks combo keep the car on track. Behind the front GTR Rotas Eurospec installed a K–Sport 356mm brake kit with massive 8 Pot calipers to stop the EVO.
A lot of care went towards weight reduction and the aerodynamics of this EVO. The interior is completely stripped out and the OEM glass windows were thrown away in favor of lighter Lexan windows. The same occurred to the doors as well, in the end there’s no place for metal doors in a caged car. Carbon fibre is the material of choice the bonnet, boot and wing.
This year the Eurospec team spent a lot of time refining the aerodynamics. Except for the aforementioned wing Eurospec fabricated a front splitter mated to a flat under belly and a rear diffuser to further improve cornering speeds.
Interior wise the first thing you meet is a Safety Devices roll cage but bucket seats and three R-spec gauges (oil temp, oil pressure and boost) follow suit. Everything else is pretty much thrown away to save as much weight as possible.
This year Christopher and the Eurospec time Attack team are going to race in the Club Pro 4WD class, and we wish them the best of luck!
